
Academic Scholarships
Members of the Greater Rappahannock Area Ladies League (GRALL) are committed to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry within our community.
GRALL has awarded two academic scholarships per year. The eligibility criteria are as follows:
1) The applicant must be a candidate for graduation in a high school within the GRALL service area.
2) The applicant must have been accepted by an accredited two-year or four-year college or university.
3) The applicant must have at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA).
4) The applicant must have submitted a completed application along with an official copy of his or her high school transcript, a copy of his or her standardized test scores, a brief essay (not more than two typed pages) stating the student's need for a scholarship, a listing of the applicant's extracurricular activities and community involvements while in high school along with any related awards, at least two letters of recommendation, including at least one from a teacher or school administrator and at least one from a member of the applicant's community who can attest to the applicant's abilities and character.
2010 GRALL Scholarship Winners
Ms. ERICA JOHNSON, Osbourn Park High School, Prince William County
Erica had a 4.391 GPA and ranked 11 of 637 in her senior class (the top 2 percent). She will receive a biotechnology certificate along with her diploma. She has been a member of the cross country team and is an athletic scholar. She holds an academic letter, academic bar, and academic lamp. She has been accepted at Cornell University and intends to major in bio-chemistry. She volunteers at the Prince William Hospital and is president of A.S.P.I.R.E. (African Sisters Proud Intelligent Respected Excelling), a group of 12 to 18 year olds at her church.
Mr. DENZEL BLOUNT, Courtland High School, Spotsylvania County
Denzel had a 4.579 GPA and ranked second in his senior class. He has been president of the National Honor Society and a member of the Student Council Association, the Latin Club, and Future Business Leaders of America. He holds an academic letter and received an Outstanding Scholar award in the James Farmer Scholars Program at the University of Mary Washington. He has been accepted at the University of Maryland (College Park) and volunteers as a literacy advancement mentor, calculus tutor, and third-grade helper.
